Traditional toothpaste and mouthwash can be loaded with man made chemicals and additives that can irritate the sensitive tissues of the mouth and gums. For the majority of people the minty tingle gives the sensation of having a clean mouth without ever really being effective. It is estimated that nearly 80% of Americans will suffer from various forms of gum infection at some point during their lifetime. Ranging from mild to severe infections that can permanently alter your oral health virtually all gum infections can be prevented. Natural alternatives to traditional toothpaste are highly effective and will keep your body free from extra additives.

Oral gum infections—even advanced ones like pyorrhea disease come from an overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria grow rapidly and release toxins around the gums that cause irritation and gum inflammation. As the irritation continues the bacteria work more deeply into the gums and lead to infection as the immune system tries to fight against the bacteria. These bacteria can even affect the ligaments and bone that support the teeth resulting in tooth loss.

For centuries the natural antibacterial properties of spearmint and peppermint oils have been used to cure infections throughout the body. They work equally as well in the mouth. When used regularly these oils can be highly beneficial at killing and removing bacteria in the mouth. Peppermint and spearmint oils that are designed for oral care use can also be used as a mouthwash as well. This can be beneficial at removing bacteria in places a toothbrush can’t reach. While natural alternatives to regular toothpaste can be intimidating it may be worth it to try something new. If you are suffering from a gum infection or pyorrhea disease already improved dental care and better cleaning products could be key to improving your oral health permanently.

Thrush is a nasty infection that occurs in the mouth by a fungus called candida, or what is commonly referred to as yeast. Everybody has small amounts of candida fungus within their body and this is normal. Normal amounts of candida fungus are found in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin. Other bacteria and microorganisms keep the candida fungus in check, but when the balance is disrupted and the candida fungus grows out of control thrush occurs. Medications, illnesses, or certain medical situations can disrupt the balance of the candida fungus within the body, these include:

Stress

Corticosteroids

Antibiotics

Birth control pills

Uncontrolled diabetes

Aids

Cancer

Dry mouth

Pregnancy

Hormonal changes

Use of tobacco products

Improper fitting dentures

Thrush affects all people young and old, male or female; however, thrush is more prevalent in babies and toddlers. Thrush typically just develops with no warning signs. The most common sign of thrush is a slightly raised lesion that forms on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of the throat. These lesions are a creamy white color and resemble cottage cheese. These lesions can be very painful and may bleed when they are rubbed.

The thrush symptoms vary from infants to that in adults. Infants who are victims of thrush will have white patches that form within the mouth and on the tongue. These patches will look like cottage cheese or milk curds. Thrush is commonly mistaken for milk and/or formula by the child’s caregiver; therefore, caregivers will attempt to rub the patches in an attempt to remove them. When this is done, the lesions will bleed. It is hard to tell the exact symptoms of thrush in babies and toddlers; however, be mindful that a child with thrush will have a poor appetite or possibly a diaper rash. A diaper rash will occur because the candida fungus that is causing the thrush is also found in the digestive tract which will then be released in the baby’s stool. Children with thrush may have a poor appetite due to their mouth and tongue being sore and/or their difficulty with swallowing. When forced to eat they may also become fussy.

Many adults suffering from thrush may have a burning sensation in their mouth and throat before any true signs of thrush appear. Adults will also suffer from the raised lesions in the mouth; however, the tissue around the lesions may be red, raw, and painful. These areas also bleed easily when they are touched or rubbed. Thrush may leave adults feeling like they have cotton in their mouths as well as having a bad taste in the mouth and difficulty tasting foods.

Thrush can be diagnosed by a dentist upon a thorough examination of the actual lesion. Once thrush is correctly diagnosed treatments can begin. Treatment begins with the use of an antifungal thrush medication that is generally taken ten to fourteen days. In addition to the medical treatment, following the practices listed below can help to minimize the chance of ever getting thrush infection:

Brush the teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day

Maintain regular dental visits for check-ups and cleanings

Limit the use of foods containing sugar and yeast

Avoid the use of all tobacco products

You’ve heard the hype about all natural oral hygiene products, but you’re skeptical. It may be difficult for you to believe that switching to an all natural product is a better choice for your mouth. After all, you’ve been using those drugstore products your whole life, and have suffered no ill effects. Well, here are three reasons why switching to a natural breath freshener, along with other natural oral hygiene products is still a good idea.

•	You’ll improve the health of your mouth. Though your regular oral hygiene products are likely doing a fine job of cleaning the food particles from your mouth and keeping your breath fresh at least temporarily, they can’t do as good a job of killing bacteria as all natural products can. The reason is the concentration of mint in all natural products. A product based in mint oils offers the best anti-bacterial and anti-fungal you can buy. Killing the bacteria in your mouth will make your breath smell better and will prevent gingivitis.

•	You’ll avoid harmful additives – Your toothpaste has detergent, your mouthwash has alcohol and your breath fresheners have either sugar or artificial sweetener. You don’t need any of those things to have a healthy mouth, and some of them may even be causing you harm.

•	You’ll save money – All natural mint oil based products are highly concentrated, so you need very little of them. And, they can be used on your toothbrush in place of toothpaste, diluted with water for mouthwash and used straight for breath freshener. What could be easier than one product that does everything?

As we get older, taking care of our mouths gets more important. Bacteria lead to plaque buildup, which leads to gingivitis, which leads to periodontal disease, which can cause tooth loss. Natural products can do so much more to protect your mouth from these common oral problems and freshen breath naturally. So, even if you’ve used traditional oral hygiene products all your life, it might be time to switch to all natural breath freshener and other all natural oral care products.
